Finally can say that I have been accepted into the Rochester Institute of Technology MAGIC Center community incubator. The incubator will give me the opportunity and support to build out a specific set of interactives that I have been working on. The quick rundown is - Using physical creativity to help create digital experiences. 4 planned interactives that will use some kind of hardware (scanner, webcam), some kind of physical creative process (drawing, building blocks) and use those 2 things to create a digital experience for users to engage with. They are meant to be plug and play interactives with minimal requirements and materials. Civitai has decided to unban Stable Diffusion 3 from its website, which is great news for all the heavy users who want access to the latest updates on this model. Mainly, the previous license for Stable Diffusion 3 granted Stability rights over anything trained on SD3 outputs, including LoRAs and fine-tunes of other models like SDXL. This raised concerns within the entire SD community about the impact on commercial uses of previous SD open-source models. The outcry against the new licensing was so strong that Stable Diffusion had to update their Self-host License to address these concerns. Key changes in the updated license: - Outputs trained on SD3 are no longer considered "Derivative Works," so the SD3 license won’t affect non-SD3 models. - 6k image/month limit and the restrictions based on revenue, company size, and funding have been removed. Important points to note: - The license can still be revoked. So you may lose your business.... - You must delete any LoRAs or fine-tunes of SD3 models if the license is terminated. - Organizations with more than $1M annual revenue need to obtain an ad-hoc enterprise license. Stable Diffusion has been a major contributor to the image AI generation ecosystem, supporting many startups and projects with their open-source models. It's fair for them to be compensated for their contributions. However, unclear licensing and competition from open-source models like Flux.1 and AuraFlow will challenge them, especially since SD3 still needs improvements and the SD community largely relies on older, more reliable SD models. #StableDiffusion #CivitAI #OpenSource

🏆 583 projects submitted to DevGAMM Lisbon from 68 countries! 🏆 537 games are ready for the DevGAMM Awards. Judges have a big job ahead!! ❤️ As always in every competition, I’m thrilled to see the projects that are about to shine in the next 1-1.5 years! 😍 Yes, I reviewed all of them 😱 This time, I want to share some of my observations: * The quality of games worldwide keeps rising with every competition! (I’m sure this won’t surprise anyone, so let’s move on!) * Main themes: adventure, discovery, recovery. Lots of beautiful stories. * Hand-drawn, 2D, and Cartoon Style are dominating visual art. Pixel Art and Realistic 3D are less common. * More Puzzle, Roguelike, and Platformer games; fewer Shooters and RPGs. * Less horror, monsters, and hell; more nature. * The quality of the art is amazing. * Titles often include the word “lost” (previously, it was more about “war” and “space,” for example). * In previous contests, I saw more characters who were older or in school. This time - a lot of animals. * Developers, as always, are creating and trying to use unique mechanics. And it looks not bad ) * Card games have more varied lore (or is that only surprising to me?)) * And for the first time in my experience: a game on a physical cartridge for the Game Boy and an AI game breaking boundaries. How about a next section for funny moments and mistakes from the submissions? 😄

TL;DR: Join this webinar by EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office and European Games Developer Federation (EGDF) to learn when to start worrying about IP protection. So, when should a game developer studio start worrying about IP? This was one of the main questions I discussed with game ecosystem builders across Europe at Gamescom. The game industry is a forerunner of digital disruption in cultural and creative industries. This also applies to the IP. Instead of pushing games to fit in the territorial IP framework, the game industry is pushing the global IP framework to fit its agile needs. When territorial licensing systems did not fit the needs of the industry, the industry built its own global production and distribution value chains. When players started to create user-generated fan content and share it on video streaming platforms, the industry built fan content policies. When procedural content creation tools (now known as proprietary AI tools) became available, the industry empowered artists to use them and create even better artistic content for games. For the game industry, IP is not just a simple IP registration and enforcement question. It is a question of knowing, as an IP right holder, what kind of decisions and when you have to make related to IP. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. At what point does it make sense for an indie game developer to use their limited time and money to register their trademarks in Europe? How about in China? When should you let players use your in-game assets for viral marketing, and when should you enforce your IP rights? When is the time to start thinking about patents and be ready to defend yourself against US-based patent trolls? All this starts with learning the elements of IP in the games industry and what tools you have in your hands to protect them. Join this webinar to learn more.

How comfortable are you in asking difficult questions to your interviewer? Yesterday, an entry-level game dev from Italy reached out to me after reading my last post. He had an offer from a mid-sized game studio and was excited but uncertain about the project he would be working on. Looking at the current scenario, he was ready to sign the offer letter regardless, but he was worried about how being on an experimental project would differ from the main one. I insisted he get clarity on it because it would give him insight into the stability and relevance of his role within the company. If it’s a main project, he would know how critical it is to the company’s revenue goals. If it’s experimental, he should understand the risks, especially in a field where projects can get shelved. Asking these questions not only helps in making an informed decision but also shows the company that you’re serious about your role and its impact. If you’re heading into an interview—don’t hesitate to ask. It’s your career, and knowing where you’ll fit is crucial for making the right choice. I am happy to show you the first piece of my #portfolio 🤖. This is one of my academic #speedprojects completed in 10 days done during my second year in AIV - Accademia Italiana Videogiochi. Knowing I had 10 days I divided my work into :  - 1 day of #referencing. - 2 of #modeling. - 3 of #texturing. - 1 of #Uv. The remaining for #polishing. The model is a dreadnought of #Warhammer4OK, a theme chosen by the teachers at the beginning of the project.

Fortias Saga is getting featured on the Apple App Store. And as a start-up, it means a lot to us. It means that in some perspective, we're on the right way, and the project is good enough to be recognized by the store team. It means that in a sprint meeting, we have a bit less pressure on how to make enough money to reach the break-even. It means that we don't have to lay off anyone on the team because the project is unprofitable and a start-up needs to survive first. It means that we can hire a few more people to work on this project, and make it a bit better. Video Games Industry is facing an unprecedented crisis. In 2023, more than 9.000 developers lost their jobs, despite the success of major titles. The problem goes beyond layoffs: Many of these individuals struggle to pay rent, access healthcare and support their families. In an industry that generates billions, it's shocking that those who build this wealth are left unprotected. The greatest AAA studies, focused on quick returns for shareholders, sacrifice their teams in pursuit of short-term gains. Emerging technologies, such as GenAI, add pressure and accelerate changes, leaving thousands of workers in a constant battle to adapt or be pushed out of the game entirely. The gaming community also has an important role. It must demand more transparency and social responsibility from companies — this is urgent. Enjoying the final product is not enough, it’s time to value and safeguard those who bring these creations to life. The sector’s sustainability hinges on internal solutions, policies that protect talent, and a more aware community. ■ Are we ready for this change? ■ Can we envision an industry that blends innovation, success, and social responsibility?
